Are You Accidentally Pushing Away What You Want?

“You can’t take in what you won’t let yourself hold.”

You’ve been asking. Visualising. Believing. Doing everything the books told you to do.

So why don’t you have it already?

Here’s a possibility you may not have considered: the answer might have nothing to do with manifesting at all. It might be about receiving.

Because here’s the part that gets left out. To manifest a thing, you first have to be able to hold it. You have to have the capacity to receive it. And most of us, without ever noticing, have learned to push away the very things we’re asking for.

I can almost hear the objection. But of course I’d love to receive what I want. So let me ask you to sit with this for a moment. If you were truly, wholly open to receiving, why don’t you have it yet?

You see, receiving isn’t a wish. It’s a capacity. And like any capacity, you either have it built or you don’t. And the good news is, it can be built.

So before we get to how, let’s find out where you actually stand. Be honest with yourself here.

Are you someone who deflects a compliment the moment it lands? “Oh no, not me.” “You must be blind.” Or do you fire one straight back, partly to be kind, partly to get the spotlight off yourself? Anything but a simple thank you?

Are you someone who feels a little awkward receiving a gift for no reason? A bunch of flowers just for being you. A voucher because you did something kind. And is your very next thought I need to repay this?

Do you keep a quiet mental ledger, tracking what’s been given so you can keep the books balanced? If any of that stung a little, good. That sting is the block, and now you can see it.

Opening up to receiving can feel deeply off-centre. Especially if somewhere along the way you learned to believe you weren’t quite worthy of it. And that’s really what receiving is. It’s the felt sense, at some level, that you deserve what you’ve been given.

That you can take another’s gift, or their kind words, without owing them a thing in return. So here is the question underneath all the others…

Can you love yourself enough to simply receive?

This matters. Refusing a compliment, refusing help, refusing the gift: it’s all the same refusal. It’s life reaching out to hand you something. And something in you, gently but firmly, pushing the hand away.

And every time it happens, an old belief is telling the Universe one quiet thing: I’m not open to this. So the Universe, ever obliging, stops offering.

Think of it like a tap and a glass. The water is always running. Abundance is always flowing.

But if you keep the glass turned upside down, it doesn’t matter how much pours out. Nothing lands. Receiving is simply the act of turning the glass the right way up.

So how do you turn it over? You practise. I know it can feel uncomfortable, but I promise you: even one of these is a real start. See if you feel the shift.

You can…

  1. Notice you’re already receiving. Right now: the air in your lungs, the food on your plate, the hug from someone who loves you. You’ve never not been receiving.
  2. Practise taking the compliment. Count your blessings, and name what you’re grateful for. Let yourself acknowledge what you’ve already been given.
  3. Allow, and listen. Slow down and watch the seasons turn. Walk in nature, rest properly, sit in stillness and be grateful for everything already provided.
  4. Give freely, then let it come back. Hand out compliments, and notice how good giving feels. Then allow yourself onto the receiving end of that same generosity.

You see, being receptive is an opening. An allowing. An acknowledgement that there is abundance, and that some of it is yours. Abundance flows to receivers, not because they’re special, but because they’ve let go of the old belief that they don’t deserve it.

It starts with you. It always starts with how you feel about what you’re worth.

So here is something you can do for the next seven days.

  1. When someone compliments you, say thank you. Nothing more. Notice how it feels.
  2. Practise gratitude for everything, even the ‘bad’ stuff. It all helped you decide what you want.
  3. Notice the blocks that come up: where did the belief begin? Perhaps as a child you only ‘got’ something when you were doing what others wanted. So you came to believe you weren’t worthy unless you were earning it.
  4. If receiving is still hard, receive and then pass it forward. Give a compliment, a kindness, a smile to a stranger. Practise giving, and watch receiving get easier.
  5. On day seven, check in. Are you lighter, more expansive? And when someone thanks you, can you take it, and feel okay?

You see, it’s all just a journey. A practice, a slow self-discovery. There will be days you still feel guilty to receive, days you feel not worth it, and that’s allowed.

We all share the same worries, the same lack, the same quiet unworthiness. But through practice, together, we get to raise the frequency. So I’ll leave you with the only question that really matters today: the next time life offers you something, will you let yourself hold it?
