Which Wolf Do You Feed?

I love this fable! It supposedly comes from the Cherokee culture, but this is unconfirmed.

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

We all have battles inside us and we all have a choice about what wolf we feed.  If you feed hate and anger, depression and despair with more of it, that wolf wins the battle.  But with love and understanding to both yourself and others, the other wolf that represents compassion, faith, harmony and light wins.

The more you put out there, the more of that comes back.  So if you are putting good stuff out there, expect more of it.  And don’t beat yourself up if on the odd occasion (or many!) the evil wolf wins.  Every moment and every day is yet another wonderful opportunity to choose again 🙂
